A Senior Affiliate Professor at INSEAD’s Organizational Behavior Department, where he has won Teaching Awards, Professor Alvarez was a Visiting Professor at Harvard Business School, where he taught the “Power and Influence” MBA elective course, and at Cambridge University’s Judge Institute of Management.
His main areas of expertise focus on the distinctive tasks, roles and careers of executive leaders both in the public and private sectors, with an emphasis on the development of their political and social capabilities.
The author of eight books, his academic research has been published in the Sloan Management Review, Journal of Organizational Behavior, Organization Studies, Organizations, and Corporate Governance, and he has contributed chapters to many books as well.
He is a frequent presence in the Spanish media, with pieces appearing in newspapers such as El País y La Vanguardia, and he has contributed to The Financial Times, BBC World News, Al-Jazeera and other international media. Alvarez’s consulting experience has centered on issues of change and governance.
José Luis Alvarez holds degrees in Law and Philosophy from the University of Barcelona, an MBA from IESE Business School, and an MA and Ph.D. in Organizational Behavior from Harvard University.
